Makeshift Reading Series is a quarterly reading event, launched in 2015 by Mary Thompson and Danielle Pappo in Seattle, Washington. Makeshift creates a DIY environment that encourages accessibility and openness, seriousness without pretension, resourcefulness, and fun.
How it works? Makeshift Reading is made possible by friends and community members. Once every season, Makeshift hosts a themed reading at a new and local venue. We aim for spaces that are comfortable, adaptable, and made to feel like home (and oftentimes are homes). Thanks to the willingness and generosity of our community members, we are able to use each space for gathering, for reading, for listening, for writers, and for all interested. Each event features three to four lovely readers, emerging and established, published and unpublished, followed by an open mic session. A quarterly zine is distributed during the night to celebrate our featured readers' works.
Want to be apart of Makeshift? Contact [email protected] if you would like to host the next Makeshift Reading event at your home or shop, or if you would like to be a featured reader at the next Makeshift Reading event.
Makeshift is a free & public event, and we intend to keep it that way. While we plan and produce each reading from the bottom of our hearts, we also pay for all event materials out-of-pocket. If you would like to contribute to Makeshift Reading through a donation, we would really appreciate it. Please send donations to: paypal.me/makeshiftreading. All donations will go towards production of the event and the Makeshift Zine.
